Given these unfavorable trends, President Joe Biden and his advisers have accurately couched the administration’s democracy agenda in the language of humility, reform (“constructing back better”), and appeals to the center class. Its withdrawal from Afghanistan, as chaotic and painful as it was, nonetheless yanked the band-aid off a wound that was festering for too long and at too high a price.
